A hidden golfing secret could easily describe The Craythorne. With spectacular views over both the Dove and Trent Valley’s and the Derbyshire Hills in the distance, this privately owned course combines great interest with challenging golf. On the tees at the top of the course it is worth stopping for a moment and looking around, because whatever time of year you play, the views are extraordinary. By modern standards the course is shorter that many but the degree of difficulty and easy walking make it ideal for golfers of all abilities. However, what the course lacks in length, it makes up for in strategy and shotmaking. Considerable improvements in design during the last 5 years have made the course both difficult and enjoyable to play. Four of the toughest par 3s you can find anywhere really test the discerning golfer. The signature hole par 5, 14th demands both accuracy and length to tame the tree-lined fairway before you take on the steady climb to the bunker surrounded green. A new loop of holes were opened in 2002 and has matured quickly to produce a greater feeling of space and size. There has been continuing work completed over the 2003 winter period. The new 16th hole has been completely renovated along with a new tee complex at the 17th and 2nd. There are still a number of holes in the middle of the course which are somewhat close together but this does not take away from the enjoyment and challenge. Many of the greens have been extensively worked on during the winter and there is a programme of bunker drainage which will carry on well into 2004. At the end of the round, the pub and restaurant are open to all. Prices are good value and certainly the daily specials and promotions are to be commended. During the year, the Course hosts many Open and Corporate Competitions. We also have selected Charity competitions for Members and guests alike. Look on the News Section for more details. All in all, this is a course which is improving every year and worth a visit. We look forward to greeting you at The Craythorne.
