The Leicester Golf Club was formed at a meeting in June 1890 at the home of John Corah. Playing rights were acquired over the Leicester Racecourse, beginning on 1st January 1891, and the club was formally instituted on 16th February. The club moved to a site on Stoughton Road early in 1892, where a temporary 14 hole course was later superseded by a 9 hole course, developed with the assistance of George Smith, the first professional. The new course and clubhouse were opened in October 1894.The club changed its name to "The Leicestershire Golf Club" in 1895, to establish its title to represent the County in matches with other counties claiming the same status. The course was extended to 18 holes in 1899 and 1910, improvements by James Braid included a number of new bunkers. The course was extended and redesigned by Major Charles Mackenzie in 1936, but after the War, the 1st,10th and 18th were lost under the ring road. The new clubhouse on Evington Lane was opened in December 1965. The new course, designed by C.K. Cotton, taking in additional land on the eastern boundary, but retaining 7 of Charles Mackenzie's holes, was opened in 1967. The chief features are the Evington Brook, the spinneys and a large number of new trees. The 7th is the only hole dating back to the 19th century.
