The golf club, at Hopwood Park, is an 18 hole championship standard course designed by Harry Shapland Colt. It is a superb mixture of parkland and moorland set in some 240 acres. It totals 6,519 yards with SSS 72 and presents a real challenge to the low handicap golfer.

The golf course is laid out on wild and rugged moorland, halfway between Manchester and Rochdale. The plateau divided into two by a wide irregular ravine with a brook winding through the bottom of it, makes ideal golfing ground. Multitudinous minor gullies and other under-features contribute to the adventurous quality of the holes.

The club was originally called "The Manchester St Andrews Golf Club" to distinguish it from another club called the "The Manchester Golf Club", founded as early as 1818. In 1883 when it was considered that the latter club had ceased playing the words St Andrew's were dropped and the original Manchester Golf Club was called "The 'Old' Manchester Golf Club", a title it retains today.
