"Harry Shapland Colt; Thorndon's designer was one of the finest golf architects of the day. He also designed the new course at Sunningdale, Royal St George's and the west course at Wentworth amongst many other well known golf courses. At Thorndon Park he found a splendid environment in which to blend his ideas: turf made lush and springy by centuries of grazing by deer; woodland including great oaks, elms and cedars from the Middle East and Virginia imported by the eighth Lord Petre, a renowned botanist and gardener; and a five-acre lake as part of the parkland landscape fashioned by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
